So I am replacing my side stand because unfortunately I chose to park in a parking lot that had a lot of construction going on and one of the crews knocked my bike over.  No worries though, the projects insurance company covered all the damage.  You may choose to remove and install this in a different order or manner, but this is how I did it.

Parts:

  •  34024-0024 – Side Stand [Kick Stand]

Tools:

  • Rear Stand

  • 1/4" Ratchet

  • 3/8" Ratchet

  • 5mm Hex Socket

  • 6mm Hex Socket

  • 10mm Socket

  • 17mm Socket

  • Channel Locks [Pliers]

  • White Lithium Grease

Enjoy, and remember ALWAYS work safe and I assume NO RESPONSIBILITY for your actions, mechanical abilities or anything that may occur during the nature of the repairs.

Pretty simple stuff once you get the spring off.  As you can see here the only thing that happened to the side stand was that the extender broke off.  I tried to JB Weld it on, but that didn’t work:

First I removed the shifter just to get it out of the way.  Remove the 10mm bolt and slide the shift lever off:

Then I removed the covers and then the stay-step themselves.  Number 1 in the pic are 6mm hex head bolts, number 2 is a 5mm hex head bolt.  Once you’ve removed the bolt labeled 2 these “covers” just pull out of there rubber grommets:

Here’s a look at the pegs on the back of these covers, there are 3 total:

And here are 2 of the 3 rubber grommets that the “pegs” fit into:

Now remove the stay-step bolts, and then it just slides off so have one hand holding it:

Here’s how it looks now:

Now with the Side Stand in the “Up” position, basically I took a pair of channel locks [pliers] and grabbed the spring at the long straight metal part, then used both hands to push the spring allowing it to expand and then popped the hooks off:

Now I removed the side stands rear 17mm nut:

Remove the 10mm side stand safety switch bolt.  Simply unbolt and let the safety switch hang:

Now remove the 17mm bolt on the front of the side stand, and remove the side stand.  The side stand itself is threaded on the backside:

And here’s the old one……minus the peg…:

Now to put the new one on, first I threaded the new side stand on, 17mm bolt:

Now put the rear nut on and torque to 33 ft. lbs:

Then push the side stand up and reconnect the spring:

Now put the side stand safety switch back on, 10mm bolt:

Then put the shift lever back on, you can see the alignment dots here and tighten the 10mm bolt to secure the shift lever.  Next put the stay-step and cover back on:

And here I go just like new:

And finally I took some white lithium grease and lubed up the contact points on the side stand:
