Battery Backups [UPS]
are great but I think they forget one very important part, begin rant,
NOT all plugs are created equal...! You know you have some plugs
that are fat, some that are skinny, some that are fat and thin and
very few that are just like a plug we saw from years past....a vacuum
plug comes to mind.
So after using up the
life on my old battery backup, which fit all sorts of various plugs, I
bought a new one. It's a CyberPower 1350 something or other,
like I don't really know ha-ha, and so far I really like it.
Except for the outlets! So I headed off to ace hardware in
search of some very small extension cords and I found nothing, nada,
zip. Instead I came home with the parts to make my own and I
though I'd share it with you.
Pretty simple really,
but we'll walk through it anyway.

First what you'll need. Some
electrical plugs preferably grounded, some electrical wire and
hopefully you'll have all the tools at home, but if not you need some
wire strippers / cutters, philips head screwdriver and and exacto
knife or the like to cut the shielding:
First remove the screw from the plug and
slide the inside out to get a look at what you'll be working with, and
then set it a side. |
Now you can either strip the wire
shielding OR leave it intact while you thread it through the plug end.
I personally had best luck cutting the shielding first, but check it
out yourself and try it with the shielding on first, because once you
cut it off there's not turning back: |
Whichever way you went you're going to
end up here. We now need to cut the "string" from the mix to
unveil the 3 wires we'll be working with: |
Like so, now strip the ends of the
wires, maybe about a 1/2"-3/4" should do: |
And individually wrap them around the
proper screw / mount on the plug. Like so: |
Work your way around all 3.
Remember, green is ground and for the other 2 white goes on the left
side as you look at the plug. |
The other end: |
All tightened down with the cover back
on: |
.....and here you go, a home made mini
extension plug that should work perfectly: |
Here's the back of the UPS as I am
plugging in my mini extension cables. You see what I mean about
the plugs?!? What were they thinking.... |
After you get everything plugged
in properly, flip the UPS around and settle it in to position.
You should be able to grab the bundle of cable and arrange them to fit
properly:
