Well in an effort to have extra storage space for backups and so on, I've been on a quest to find something that works good.  I've been through simple external HDD's, Western Digital World Books, a PC that we used as a file server and finally arriving at the HP Media Smart Sever running Windows Home Server.

I bought it just after Christmas 2008 and promptly changed out the memory for a little extra.  So far the machine works great and allows for some pretty cool stuff when setting things up properly.

Below you'll find the process of changing out the memory.  I put a 2GB stick in and it's working great.

Please, although I've read that this will not void your warranty anymore, if you DO NOT feel comfortable or capable of taken apart a PC please pay to have this done!

First open up the door and then remove this screw using a quarter:

Now pop this clips down, lift the handle and carefully slide out the HDD tray:

Like so, pull handle and then slide the HDD tray out.  Repeat this for each HDD tray [4 Total] and set them each aside noting which tray went in which slot:

Now slide the top off by pressing back to front:

Here's a pic to show your the locking tabs.  Visual it and you should be able to pop the top pretty easy:

Now look to the back of the machine and you should see these plugs.  You need to remove them all carefully:

2 more plugs to remove:

Now twist these blue tabs towards the front on the machine:

Now put your fingers inside the machine [where the HDD trays where] and pop this up:

And slide it up for removal:

Set it aside carefully:

Now get out your 00 [I remember?] philips head screw driver and remove some screws, 2 here:

And slide the cover off, then remove this plug and finally set it aside:

Now remove 2 more screws [see arows]:

And carefully slide the whole unit out:

Here's the new memory:

Now let's pop out the old.  Push out on these two clips and then pull the memory out:

Now we get to put the new memory in.  Line it up and push down to lock in place [see arrow 1] and then snap the clips inward [see arrow 2]:

Now it should look like this:

Now slide it back in:

Put the screws back in, DO NOT over tighten:

Like so:

Now put this back in.  Slide it in and then line it up with the hooks and snap it on place:

I had best luck using to fingers to push down and lock in place....not quite a shocker:

Now twist the two blue locks in place:

Plug these two back in:

Then this one:

Now put the top on.  Line these hooks up and slide it back.  It took a little finesse:

Now slide the HDD trays back in, make sure they are in the same order, at least the one that holds the operating system:

Put the cover back on and use your penny to tighten:

Now put it where ever you keep it.  Mines here for now, but I will be moving it so look for an update on the close build:

Boot it up and make sure it works....Ha-Ha:
